Tie Dye

Yay! Everyone loves tie die! Just ask the students to bring in their own 100% cotton shirt and you can do this art project with your class. This art project can connect well with a unit on chemistry.

Materials
  • T-Shirts for everyone
  • Soda Ash
  • Water
  • Rubber bands
  • Urea
  • Various colors of dye
  • Squeeze bottles
  • Plastic bags
Or you can get a high quality tie dye kit that includes all of these materials at the craft store.
Here is a wonderful website about how to tie dye: http://www.dharmatrading.com/tie-dye/instructions.html
It goes through all of the steps in depth, so I will just write some quick instructions.

1. Soak the shirts in soda ash.
2. Fold your shirt however you want your design to turn out and strap rubber bands around it.
3. Squirt on your dye.
4. Put the shirt in a plastic bag for 24 hours.
5. Wash it alone in cold water.
