Mimetic Grade Level Adaptations

Here are some possible grade level adaptations for the mimetic art unit:
  • Ally Adams
Grade: 3rd
Time needed: Two 45 minute sessions

Objective: Students will understand the mimetic theory and demonstrate an understanding of the essence of their current environment and how it existed in the past through creating a classroom vivarium.

National Visual Arts Standard
3. Content Standard: Choosing and evaluating a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas
Achievement Standard: Students explore and understand prospective content for works of art
select and use subject matter, symbols, and ideas to communicate meaning

State Visual Arts Standard
Utah State Standard: Visual Art

Standard 3 (Expressing): The student will choose and evaluate artistic subject matter, themes, symbols, ideas, meanings, and purposes. Objective 2d  Discuss, evaluate, and choose symbols, ideas, subject matter, meanings, and purposes for their own artworks. Create a work of art that uses a similar subject matter, symbol, idea, and/or meaning found in a significant work of art.

Utah State Standard: Science
Standard 2
Students will understand that organisms depend on living and nonliving things within their environment. Objective 2e
Describe the interactions between living and nonliving things in a small environment. Pose a question about the interaction between living and nonliving things in the environment that could be investigated by observation.

Grade:  2
Time Needed: 2 days (45 min each day)
Objective:  Students will understand the mimetic theory and demonstrate their ability to create a piece of art that captures a part of their daily environment through classroom vivarium.

National Standards
NA-VA.K.4.2 – Using Knowledge of Structures and Functions
Students know the difference among visual characteristics and purposes of art in order to convey ideas

State Standards
Standard 1 – Students develop language for the purpose of effectively communicating through listening, speaking, viewing, and presenting.
Objective 1 – Develop language through listening and speaking
b. Speak clearly and audibly with expression in communicating ideas.

Standard 3 – Students will develop an understanding of their environment
Objective 1 – Investigate relationships between plans and animals and how living things change during their lives.
a. describe the life cycle of local plans and animals using diagrams and pictures.

Time needed: Two 45 minute sessions
Objective: Students will understand what mimetic theory is, as well as the value of reducing, reusing, and recycling. They will generate ideas to limit usage of natural resources.
