It is important to have a knowledge of the different types of pencil when you teach pencil drawings and shading because the different types of pencil are useful for different things. the most common pencil we use in school is the HB pencil, but students should be informed that artists use pencils with different levels of hardness. This information can be very helpful for students who show interest in pencil drawings. Here is a graphic that shows the darkness of the different types of pencil:
9B would be the softest and 9H would be the hardest.
